The Obama Administration and 9/11

The Democratic Convention was tremendous political theater for the American electorate. Speaker after speaker talking about American exceptionalism and then ending their speeches with God bless America. Perfectly choreographed as they told us that Osama Bin Laden was dead and for all intents and purposes so was Al Qaeda and the threat of terrorism , unfortunately none of this was true or indicative of their positions. This President toured the world apologizing for our arrogance in thinking that we were better than any other country. Through his words and his deeds he said we had no right to proclaim America was exceptional. This convention was run by this administration and it was no coincidence that the platform had no mention of God in it or recognition that Jerusalem was the capital of Israel. The charade fell apart when the media reported on these glaring omissions and they were forced to try and fix it by bringing it to a vote. The delegates were asked by voice vote three times looking for the required two thirds majority before the chair declared that the ayes had it and the language was inserted into the platform. The floor erupted in a loud chorus of boos as a two thirds majority had not agreed but the administration knew it had to embrace the platform change and forced it through.

Obama reached out to the Muslim world in his Cairo speech in 2009 going so far as to say we were a Muslim nation as well. He quoted “the holy Koran” several times and talked about his experience hearing the call to prayer in the morning on three continents and was now, “here, where Islam was revealed”. Eventually the cry for democracy began to fill the streets of the Middle East, beginning in Iran. The President was strangely silent as the protesters were jailed, beaten and killed and the Ayatollahs and President Ahmedinejad stayed in power. The so called Arab Spring then spread from Tunisia to Egypt where he sided with the protesters and called for a loyal United States ally to step down. President Mubarak was toppled giving rise to the Muslim Brotherhood gaining a majority in parliament and the election of President Morsi. We then intervened with Nato partners namely France and Germany in Libya in their civil war. This action was an undeclared war which is, by our Constitution, a power held by Congress. He sidestepped Congress and the War Powers Act by saying no ground troops were involved. This while hundreds of Tomahawk cruise missiles were fired from U.S. warships overstepping his Constitutional powers and shifting the balance of power to the rebels, toppling Ghaddafi

This leads us to September 11, 2012 where a regime led by President Morsi who we helped gain power watched and did nothing as protesters descended on our embassy in Cairo supposedly enraged that their prophet had been blasphemed in a relatively unknown YouTube video. Our government had 24 hour notice of the impending danger in Cairo and did nothing. So on September 11th we watched as our embassy was breached, our flag desecrated and replaced by an Al Qaeda flag. Thousands of protestors chanted Obama, Obama we are all Osamas. How did our government respond? They apologized and said the video had nothing to do with the United States government.

Meanwhile in Benghazi, Libya our consulate was attacked and set ablaze. Four Americans were killed including our ambassador who was brutally attacked, sodomized and dragged through the streets. He was a man who had been there throughout the conflict working with the rebels and this is how he was repaid. Our government immediately dismissed the notion that this was a terrorist attack insisting we were told, it was angry crowds reacting spontaneously to the insult to Islam. The Libyan transitional government called it a terrorist act and yet we had our U.N. Ambassador lie to us, the truth is our government was unprepared on September 11th and their weakness on foreign policy directly led to these attacks and Obama’s reaction reinforced his unwillingness to stand up and say the war on terror is ongoing. The President not only didn’t face the truth with the American people he showed indifference to the importance of this happening to us on this solemn day where we remember all that was lost in 2001. This President has failed the American people and sent a signal of weakness to the Middle East in his reaction to the violence committed against us on 9-11 of all days. He apologized to the Muslim world with a half hearted mention of our God given right of free speech while condeming the hate speech against Islam. Calling for responsible speech yet saying there is still no reason for acts of violence. This policy of apologizing for American insensitivites to Muslim feelings while he attacks the very tenets of many Christians with the power of coercive laws here at home is hypocritical and unconscionable. His actions speak louder than his words calling himself a Christian. The President in light of what happened decided to go to Las Vegas for a rally and fundraiser. His words at that rally in acknowledging just the beginning of what would spread to anti-American protests around the globe were a slap in the face of all Americans. He said and I quote,” Yesterday we had a tough day”. This weakness, apologizing and lack of indignation should be outrageous and unacceptable to us all.

The United States, Israel and Iran

The president decided that he will not as requested meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later this month here in Washington or in New York at the United Nations at the General Assembly meetings. This after Secretary of State Hillary Clinton proclaimed there are no deadlines for Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency claimed Iran is getting closer to a weapon. Reporting that they are working on computer modeling the destructive power of an atomic warhead, clearly indicating that Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons technology. Iran threatens to wipe Israel off the map and to attack both American troops in the region and America itself. The Israeli Prime Minister says ‘The world tells Israel, ‘Wait. There’s still time and I say: ‘Wait for what? Wait until when?’ Those in the international community who refuse to put red lines before Iran don’t have a moral right to place a red light before Israel.’’ When Israel is threatened with complete annihilation, the United States has a moral responsibility to ensure that the Jewish people are defended and protected.

The United States and the people of the world vowed that after the holocaust, we would never allow it to happen again. Yet when Israel is threatened more than ever, the administration snubs Israel and the Prime Minister leaving them isolated and left to deal with the Iranian threat alone without American support. This behavior is unconscionable and all Americans must contact our elected officials in the House, Senate and President Obama to support a bipartisan effort to voice our unequivocal support for Israel pressuring the White House to commit to eliminating the Iranian’s from acquiring a nuclear weapon or the technological ability to create them.

The Democratic Platform originally did not recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel until the media publicized it. The floor vote on the convention floor was supposed to pass with a two thirds majority and after three voice votes the chairman said the ayes had it drawing a chorus of boos by the delegates. This display showed the Democratic Party and administration does not support Israel, the omission was intentional and only changed for political expediency and not conviction. This continues a trend by this administration of bringing our historical traditions and policies to an abrupt end while openly disrespecting Israel’s leaders and failing to support the nation of Israel. This administration would allow the destruction of Israel and the mass murder of the Jewish people, abandoning one of our staunchest allies. We need a change of leadership that will stand with Israel and make it clear to our friends and foes alike that we will honor our commitments to our allies and those who would oppose us should do so at their own peril. Respect on the world stage requires leadership and peace through strength with the use of force when necessary to protect our friends, interests and fight the spread of evil by all means necessary.

The Relationship Between the United States and Israel

The position of the United States has historically been one of complete support for the Jewish State of Israel. This has been the case since the recognition of Israel and has remained true throughout the years. The relationship however has been markedly different over the past almost four years. The signs have been unmistakable as a valued ally has been treated with a total lack of respect. French President Sarkozy called Prime Minister Netanyahu a liar, President Obama caught unguarded on a live microphone responded, “at least you don’t have to listen to him everyday”. Longstanding U.S. policy abandoned with the endorsement of the position held by the Palestinians, stating that the peace negotiations should begin with Israel returning to the pre 1967 war borders without any concessions on the part of the Palestinians. The lands won were from Egypt, Jordan and Syria, not Palestine. This places Israel in a position of giving up strategic land won, leaving the Israeli borders indefensible. Prime Minister Netanyahu was then snubbed for dinner and yet responded with a tremendous speech to a joint session of Congress highlighting our common values, unshakeable historical alliance and common interests.

Provocative actions by Iran were responded to by cancelling planned joint military exercises with U.S. and Israeli defense forces hardly a show of strength and support. Iran has been allowed to pursue a nuclear weapon without the U.S. preparing a military response leaving Israel to prepare to act alone at a time when the Middle East has never been a more dangerous place. Administration sources leaked an Israeli plan in April to attack Iran from airbases in Azerbaijan effectively destroying the element of surprise, forcing the cancellation of the airstrikes to destroy the Iranian nuclear program. They leaked sensitive national security secrets to the press publicly acknowledging that the U.S and Israel had created and deployed the Stuxnet virus that sabotaged the Iranian nuclear program. These were covert acts of war that should never have been revealed, costing us the ability to continue this path of slowing Iran’s pursuit of a nuclear weapon. Funds were withheld and $70 million was just recently released to assist Israel with its Iron Dome missile defense system both done in an election year with obvious political motives.

Clearly the level of support enjoyed by Israel over the years is not what it once was. It is a sad day when the Prime Minister of Israel concludes that the current American leadership will never attack Iran. America and Israel must stand firm together, against all threats. Leadership that unequivocally supports Israel must be put back into place here in America. The relationship between the United States and Israel must be repaired, as Israel finds itself increasingly surrounded by groups who openly advocate their destruction. America has a moral obligation to ensure that history is not repeated and the Jewish people may continue to live in peace and security. Israel must know that America stands with you. When dependable diplomatic and military support once counted on is in question, confidence must be restored immediately as the stakes have never been higher.

The Catholic Perspective on the Election of 2012

The election of 2012 presents us with multiple issues that pertain to our faith and for the first time the ability to practice it freely. We as Catholics are called to follow our faith and conscience as we reflect on the issues pertaining to our choice of candidates. It is our moral duty to examine the candidates’ positions and beliefs, their consistency with our Church teachings and promoting our values. We are called to be living examples of promoting the teachings of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and spreading the Churches’ teachings through our actions, words and deeds. The election process is a key example of how we can promote Catholic values through selecting candidates who will embrace and defend our principles.

This election we have several issues that relate directly to our Catholic faith. We have the issue of legalized abortion, protecting the sanctity of life from conception. The Church has always promoted a pro-life position and advocated for us to consider this as we choose our candidates to represent us. We have the issue of protecting the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman as the foundation of society. The Sacrament of Matrimony is clearly defined and celebrated throughout Scripture. The issue of supporting gay marriage runs counter to our beliefs and church teachings throughout the centuries that matrimony is blessed by God and is an instrument of God’s will to bless us with children. The promotion of gay marriage clearly runs counter to our teachings, beliefs and the best interests of society as a whole. We cannot fall into the trap of those who would argue that gay marriage is about discriminating against gays and taking away their rights.

We also have the fight to preserve our first amendment right to Freedom of Religion which for the first time ever in American history is under attack. The Church is being forced to choose between continuing our ongoing mission to provide essential services to the community, through our charitable organizations that serve the poor, our hospitals that serve the sick, our universities that help to promote higher learning and our Christian values and go against our conscience, religious beliefs and church teachings or stop providing these essential services. The pundits have taken to calling this an attack against women when nothing could be further from the truth. This is not about denying women access to contraceptives, but about denying us our God given right to follow our religion and religious positions without interference from the federal government. A major reason why the first immigrants came here was to escape state sponsored religion and establish freedom from government sponsored religion. This is an unprecedented federal government attempt to undermine one of the major tenets of our system of government which provides for freedom to practice our religion free from federal interference, we cannot allow it to be undermined. This is an issue we cannot take lightly as the next president could conceivably be able to choose two Supreme Court Justice Nominees during this next term which could affect the direction of the court for many years to come. We Catholics must stand up united on Election Day defending the positions that define us. We must help this nation find its moral compass so that God may continue to bless this great country.

The Truth About Medicare

Posted in Politics, Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 28, 2012 by authorcarloscardoso

There have been many political ads trying to scare America’s seniors into believing that Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan wish to end Medicare and break our commitment to our seniors, nothing could be further from the truth. Quite to the contrary, they are the only candidates who have promised to keep Medicare benefits for all Americans 55 or older. Beginning with keeping the $716 billion dollars being taken out by Obamacare to help fund it, believing our seniors deserve what they paid into and worked for their whole lives, and were promised. Obama made no effort to strengthen the program in his first term, ignoring Medicare completely, knowingly allowing it to head towards bankruptcy making it unavailable to future generations.

Obama’s plan allows Medicare to go bankrupt in 2024 without offering a solution. It takes over $716 billion from the program for Obamacare and then empowers 15 bureaucrats to make further cuts who are unelected and unaccountable to congressional overview. The Romney approach differs greatly from Obama’s; together with Paul Ryan they have bipartisan support for keeping benefits intact for anyone 55 or older. They also want to ensure that the promises made to all other Americans are sustainable and will be there when they need it. Obama‘s trying to scare you because as he said himself as a candidate in 2008, when you have no new ideas to offer, no record to run on, you resort to trying to use scare tactics against your opponent.

The truth is there’s been a lack of leadership, four years and nothing to brag about but the passage of Obamacare, a hugely unpopular law adding one trillion dollars in taxes on top of the theft of over $700 billion from Medicare to pay for it. We were told it was not a tax yet it is actually the largest tax increase in American history The Romney, Ryan plan is to keep that money in Medicare where it belongs and work from day one towards enacting the full repeal of Obamacare. This alone eliminates a trillion dollar tax increase, while undoing another entitlement program that we ultimately can’t afford. The president promised he would cut the deficit in half in his first term, another broken campaign promise, instead he added $5 trillion in additional debt, all in just four years. Spending without budgeting restraint, helped by the fact that ally Senator Harry Reid has not allowed a vote on a budget on the Senate floor since 2009.

The choice on Medicare is simple, you have Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan vowing to keep our promises to all Americans 55 or older while working on a bipartisan plan to ensure we can offer future generations a Medicare program they can rely on. The other choice is Obamacare and its decimation of Medicare by stealing over $716 billion, straddling us with debt, building an entitlement program with a trillion dollar tax increase on top of the $5 trillion dollars he has added to the deficit. Unfortunately Obama’s distorting the Romney plan, because after four years he has no plan, no vision and no record. No path towards saving Medicare while speeding up its destruction so he must resort to scare tactics.
